Action cameras are great for outdoor activities where they support extreme sports. There is a good number of models available in the market. Sometimes it may be hard to choose one especially when presented with two quality models. SJCAM has produced many action cameras with innovative features. Two of these cameras are Sjcam SJ7 Star and Sjcam SJ6 Legend. SJcam SJ7 Star is considered better because it’s newer. However, SJ6 Legend also comes with a ton of quality features. SJcam SJ7 Star is considered an upgrade of SJ6 Legend. This review aims at comparing the two models.
Design and Usability
SJ7 Star and SJ6 Legend show many similarities since they are from the same company. However, there is a little difference in terms of design and material construction. SJcam SJ6 is made of plastic and rubber material on the sides. On the other hand, SJ7 Star is made of aluminum which feels more premium. Both feature a 2-inch LCD screen. In SJ6 Legend, two buttons for settings and power are placed on the side and a recording one at the top. Its counterpart, SJ7 Star has settings and power buttons placed on the front. SJ6 Legend is designed with a threaded tripod hole underneath. Its counterpart, SJ7 Star does not have such a hole which makes it difficult to mount.
The shooting modes of these two cameras are exactly the same. They are designed with a photo time lapse and a video time lapse. There is a record option for capturing videos. A photo burst mode allows the user to get a maximum of 10 photos in series. The self-timer in both cameras can be used to adjust time delay between shots. Capture mode obtains a single photograph.
Both cameras can also record 4K videos according to specifications. However, 4K videos seem to be interpolated on SJ6 Legend. This is because the camera shoots in 2k and adds extra pixels to achieve 4k resolution. On the other hand, Sj7 Star produces solid 4K videos. Also, it can record in Full HD 1080p resolution at 120fps. SJ7 Star has a smoother video compared to SJ6 Legend which has blurry parts combined with sharp parts. J6 Legend is only capable of 60fps. SJ7 Star is a clear winner in this category.
Colors look more natural in SJcam SJ7 Star and a bit over-tuned in its counterpart. Pictures captured using SJcam SJ6 Legend show a lot of information. However, blurriness sets in once the view is enlarged. Its counterpart, SJ7 Star captures images with sharp details and colors are well distributed on the frame. The performance of SJ6 Legend also goes down with low light conditions. Freezing issues are also expected while using the 16 MP lens resolution. In SJ7 Star one can adjust the resolution from 3M to 16M and still obtain quality images. The photo mode provides great control for night shots. SJcam SJ7 Star excels in image quality.
SJ7 Star has an image stabilization feature which provides quality images under shaky conditions. It combines a gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor to stabilize vibrations while in motion. The stabilization feature works only with 1080p resolution, at 60 and 30 fps. SJ6 Legend also features a gyro stabilization system which provides fine details in shaky conditions. It is great for a biking adventure. It also comes with fisheye correction capabilities. This guarantees fine details with standard focus.
The FPV mode allows SJ6 Legend to be added to a drone. It provides more details in front of the camera while flying. This camera also features Car DVR settings which support loop recording. SJ6 Legend and SJ7 Star are designed with a built-in WiFi which supports remote control and connectivity to smartphones. Both cameras feature an SJCAM Zone which enables one to enjoy step adventurous processing. This is supported by control, capture and share buttons. It allows you to add images to the internet. They both feature a micro HDMI port on the periphery and an HD video output. A mini USB port is used for charging and connecting a mic for improved voice control. They also have an SD card slot which supports up to 128 GB.
Battery and Power
Both models come with the Li-ion 1000mAh rechargeable battery which serves for long time duration. However, there is little difference when it comes to shooting combinations. SJcam SJ7 Star battery lasts for 70 minutes while shooting at 4k and 30 fps. This time reduces to 65 minutes when recording at 1080p and 60 fps. SJ6 Legend can achieve 70 minutes duration when shooting at 4k and 24fps. It can extend up to 72 minutes when switched to 2k and 30fps. This also reduces to 65 while recording at 1080p and 60 fps. Both batteries take a maximum of 120 minutes to get fully charged. The battery power for these two models is the same, battery performance depends on shooting modes.
Both models come with standard SJCam accessories. They pack a high-quality waterproof case for all-weather purposes. A USB cable for charging is also provided in both packages. SJ7 Star adds a USB to mini USB cable. SJ6 Legend comes with rotating flat, rotating curved and handlebar and screw mounts. SJ7 Star includes a J support and handlebar attachment. Both cameras come with a lens wipe-cloth and mounting frames. SJ7 Star comes with tripod adapters. Both models come with 2 SJ cam adhesives and a user manual. SJ7 Star comes with slightly more accessories that SJ6 Legend.
